Subsidized family home child care provider -- union proponent Submitted by jknoch. Posted on Tuesday, June 03 @ 05:33:14 EDT by jknoch
|
|
When Cherry Jones isn't teaching Jaylen how to write his numbers or helping Aniya put on her shoes, she's recruiting foot soldiers for a fight.
"Any day care provider I can possibly see or find, I talk to them about getting into the union," says Jones, 45, who has run a licensed day care out of her Dolton, Illinois home for eight years, and has been working to build up the union (SEIU) that represents them for the last three.
"We're fighting for higher wages and health care. And respect, basically."

Despite Ch. 11, Allegheny Child Care Academy may expand Submitted by jknoch. Posted on Sunday, May 25 @ 19:12:51 EDT by jknoch
|
|
In spite of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in April, Allegheny Child Care Academy's new CEO, Harold Lewis, said the company will continue with plans to enter new markets.
The Allegheny Child Care business model created by Mr. Henry was to establish quality child care services in inner-city communities. At its height, the company earned about $35 million annually. Revenue comes almost exclusively from government subsidies; the majority of parents who have children enrolled in the center are welfare recipients who are re-entering the work force through welfare-to-work programs. Currently, Allegheny Child Care operates 38 centers -- most in Philadelphia -- with a total enrollment of 4,500.
According to U.S. Bankruptcy Court documents filed in Philadelphia, Allegheny Child Care Academy owes between $10 million and $50 million, and has between $1 million and $10 million in assets. Its largest unsecured creditor is Detroit Investment Fund -- a for-profit venture capital agency -- which lists an $871,000 claim.

Former child care operators sue Summit County, OH Submitted by jknoch. Posted on Sunday, May 25 @ 18:40:25 EDT by jknoch
|
|
The former owners of a child care center who faced charges of endangering children and voyeurism that were later dismissed have filed a $10 million lawsuit against Summit County, Ohio officials.
In papers filed Friday in U. S. District Court, David Corsi and Claudia Brothers charged that the Summit County sheriff's office violated their constitutional rights against improper search and seizure in searching the center and later Corsi's home.
The lawyers for Corsi and Brothers said publicity about the case destroyed their business, the K-D Day Care Center in Northfield Center Township, ruined Corsi's reputation and caused him serious emotional damage.

Businesses have a stake in early childhood development Submitted by LoriC. Posted on Wednesday, May 14 @ 10:12:28 EDT by jknoch
|
|
Minnesota's business leaders forcefully entered the education policy debate nearly 20 years ago. The result? Schools started doing things differently, including establishment of enrollment choices for parents and their kids, clearer assessments of how well kids were learning and the adoption of charter schools where students, educators and parents develop independent, publicly funded schools largely unfettered by traditional regulations.
Clearly, the competitive marketplace became a big part of public schools charged with educating Minnesota youngsters from kindergarten to grade 12.
Two recent studies have suggested that business may need to concern itself with building learning systems for even younger children.

About 4 percent of the teachers in child care (and 1.3 percent of those in family day care) are men, according to a NAEYC report.
Pay, of course, is the major factor in keeping men out of child care and early education. The association report, based on a random survey of members, found six of 10 earn $29,999 or less, despite high educational levels and years of experience.

Sunday Business section of The New York Times discusses the employee-family relationship with nannies.
"Money just seemed the wrong currency in a mom-nanny relationship. Love. Blood. Lifelong loyalty. These precious offerings seemed more appropriate. Paying someone to care for your children is like paying someone to keep your heart beating. Is there enough money anywhere to adequately compensate for it?"
