Child Care Subsidy Dried Up in Madison County

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - It's only January, but Madison County’s child care subsidy for 2010 has already dried up. Parents and children are now on a waiting list for assistance.

The subsidy helps parents offset the cost of child care. There is funding available for 175 children, but many more are on the waiting list. Heather Brunner runs Chittenango Child Care Center, and says that the price of childcare can be an obstacle for parents. “Some parents have had to leave because they just can't afford it,” she said.

The center has 13 kids on their waiting list, and very rarely has openings. While they charge relatively low prices for daycare, they serve a mix of children who pay the full fee and those who are on the subsidy. People keep applying for that subsidy, and 56 are on that waiting list, but the money has run out. “A lot of these parents are just making ends meet and both have to work to meet those ends and they can't afford to pay for daycare expenses. Being able to get assistance allows them to pay for it and be able to live,” Brunner said.
