Iowa lawmakers are considering fingerprinting child care providers in the state. It's just one recommendation from a recently formed committee studying home-based child care.

"I think it would help reassure parents they're putting their children in safe environments," Rep. Jodi Tymeson (R) Winterset said.

Current law only requires a state criminal background check.

They're also considering establishing a mandatory system of registration for in-home day cares. Right now only those with more than five children have to be registered.

Cathy Wheatcraft of Child Care Resource & Referral said Iowa is one of the lowest regulated states in the nation. She said registration can be ineffective.
