Child Care Rating System to go Statewide

Fort Wayne, IN -- Starting next month, the state will roll out a ratings system for child care providers, that was developed right here in Northeast Indiana.

It's a move that will help parents decide which child care facility would be best for their youngster.

The new Quality Rating System shows which daycare facilities -- homes, licensed centers and registered ministries -- have met certain criteria, ranging from covering children's health and safety issues.. to planned curriculum guides to prepare the kids for school, up to national accreditation.

The Alliance's director says the rating system can show parents which facility could best help their child be ready for full-day kindergarten and beyond.

Madeleine Baker\Early Childhood Alliance: " There are toys everywhere and there are little corners for kids to read, and there are different activities. And they are very much engaged and the children are chatty and engaged with each other. That would be more appropriate than something that is very sterile and very instructional from the adult perspective."

Of Allen County's 285 child care centers recommended by the Early Childhood Alliance, 51 of them have reached that top level.

And starting in January, all child care centers across the state can volunteer to be rated, as well.
