"I feel like I've been featured on an episode of Extreme Makeover-Child Care Edition," said a child care provider after participating in a 36-hour training designed to help providers improve the quality of their childcare.

And so, according to Mary Hughes, ISU Extension Family Life Specialist the project name was changed to Extreme Makeover-Child Care Edition in 2004. "What better way to celebrate the Month of the Young Child than to recognize these dedicated child care professionals," Mary says.

The research-based training series includes workshops on guidance and discipline, creative experiences in art, music, pretend play, science and math, language and literacy, diversity and multiculturalism, as well as large and small motor physical development activities.

The project links training provided by ISU Extension, Iowa Western Community College and AEA 13 with dollars that help the providers put quality improvements in place. Child Care Resource and Referral helps identify providers for the project who have completed levels 1 and 2 of Iowa's Quality Rating System.
