State officials have shifted $10 million in funding to provide child care vouchers to 2,000 children of parents working to get off of welfare.

“This funding gives our low-income Hoosiers piece of mind in knowing that their children are cared for in a safe environment while they work to provide for their families,” said Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman in a statement issued by the Family and Social Services Administration.
“The extra dollars in the Child Care Development Fund will help serve nearly 2,000 additional children whose parents are transitioning out of the welfare system.”

The money for the additional vouchers will come from the state’s Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.

With the added funds, the state is making the vouchers available to families earning up to 170 percent of the federal poverty level — up from the previous cut-off of 141 percent. The federal poverty level is about $20,000 for a family of four, and increases by about $4,000 for each additional family member.
