Two large labor unions joined Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut at a press conference today in support of a proposal to add $200 million annually to a federal block grants program for child care.
The Quality Child Care for America Act proposed by the two Democratic lawmakers would provide training for child care workers, boost their wages and provide them with benefits such as paid sick days.
The proposal has strong support from the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees and the Service Employees International Union. Over the last couple of years the two unions have been very active in organizing child care workers and people who do at-home daycare.
AFSCME President Gerald McEntee spoke at today’s event. His union is scheduled to hold an executive board meeting Oct. 31 to decide whether to make a presidential endorsement.
