WILLIAMSTOWN, Vt. -- Vermont State Police say a day care provider has been charged in the death of a baby boy who suffocated while in her care.

Four-month-old Derrick Ferris, of Tunbridge, died Jan. 21 at the home of Valerie Parrott, in Williamstown.

Police Sgt. Michael Henry said Tuesday that an autopsy found that the boy died as a result of positional asphyxia after being left face down on a couch. He says the 30-year-old Parrott, who is professionally licensed, should have had the baby in an approved sleeping area and that the baby should have been resting on its back.
