Snow Day Creates Child Care Problems for Parents

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-  While children were excited about the day out of school, the winter storm posed a big problem for parents.  With so many schools closed, parents were forced to find last minute daycare.

Wednesday was not the typical day at The Children's Playroom. There were more teachers, more parents dropping of kids, and definitely more kids for teachers to look after. It was, however, a day most school kids, no matter their age, were excited to see a snow day!

"One of my children... her school was open and his school was closed. So I had to run into work for a bit," said parent Laura Stone.

This is the very problem a lot of parents face when schools close because of the weather. Most mid-state counties closed their doors for the day leaving parents scrabbling to find a place to take their kids.

A lot of parents found a quick fix for the problem at places like The Children's Playroom. It's a drop-in child care center, and no appointment is needed. For some people, calling into work because schools are closed isn't an option, especially during this economy.

"Parents still have to get to work and this provides them with the opportunity to have somewhere to take their children, so they still can get out and do the things they need to do," said Gini Langham, owner of the Children's Playroom.

Langham has owned The Children's Playroom for 10 years and says she has never closed her doors on a snow day. She says during these days her enrollment typically doubles.

"There a variety of activities for them to do and we wan them to feel comfortable here doing whatever they're doing," said Langham.

At the Playroom, children are able to play video games, watch television, get on the computer even play with each other. It's a quick solution to a problem brought on by weather. One solution parents are grateful to have available.
