Child Care Center on Track

A child day care center next to Harpeth Valley Elementary is an appropriate project, says Bellevue area Councilman Bo Mitchell.

Academy at Bellevue would be a 15,824-square-foot day care next door to the elementary school on nearly 1.6 acres at the northeast corner of Learning Lane and Collins Road.

"It seems that it would be a great fit. Right now I think there are about 80 children from the school being bussed to other after-school programs," Mitchell said.

As proposed, the building would be set back 100 feet from the Learning Lane property line, with parking in the front. A playground, with fencing, would be in the rear of the building.

The facility is set to hold up to 175 people.

The Metro Planning Commission recommended approval of the facility at its Jan. 8 meeting.

"The next step is for the Metro Council to consider the request," said Brenda Bernards, Metro senior planner.

The Metro Council will consider the proposal on first reading Feb. 3. There will be a public hearing at the council's next meeting on March 3.

Although Mitchell supports the project, he has heard some grumbling about increased traffic but is confident the daycare will not hamper school traffic.
