If your child is in day care, you know how expensive it can be. In some cases, it can be more than a mortgage payment. A report released Wednesday says New York is one of the most expensive states for child care.
Here's the breakdown of costs in Onondaga County. Childcare for 4-year-olds on average costs $161 a week, $174 a week for toddlers, and $187 a week for infants. The prices continue to rise.
Parents are paying $10 more for child care this year at Honey Tree Day Care. Teresa Sobolewski says every year she’s forced to raise her prices. “Everything has gone up. Insurance everyone knows is a big thing. We pay anywhere from 55-75 percent of that for our employees. Payroll is like half a million dollars a year."
When you couple that with food, supplies, and the cost to rent the space, her overhead costs, unfortunately, are passed on to her parents. “There are occasions where parents come and say hey I got paid every two weeks. I don't have money right now; can I double pay next time? Yeah, we're definitely trying to help people out with that."
Honey Tree Day Care has been in business for more than 30 years, and has no plans of closing. In the last six months, several centers have closed and according to Kathy Cook from Child Care Solutions, low enrollment was the biggest issue for them. “A lot of families are turning to family members what we call legally exempt child care, so they're finding a neighbor or somebody that can do it and probably charge less money."
