SANTA FE (AP) - Gov. Bill Richardson proposes to expand a state tax credit for child care expenses.
The governor said he will ask the Legislature next year to approve the expansion, which will cost about $6 million and make an additional 3,700 families eligible for the tax credit.
About 8,600 New Mexico working families currently qualify for the tax incentive that helps cover the costs of child care.
The governor proposes to double the amount of the credit. Richardson also announced that Martha Burk will serve as his senior adviser on women's issues.
Burk lives in Corrales and is former chairwoman of the National Council of Women's Organizations.
She led a fight to open the all-male Augusta National Golf Club to women.
