Child Care Grants

In theory, it sounds good, but early child care experts are measured in their response to Governor John Hoeven's proposed day care grants.

The Governor said this week he will ask the legislature for $10 million for programs to benefit young children.

About a third of that, $3.5 million, would be earmarked for grants to build or expand child-care centers. Local North Dakota organizations that want a share of the money must contribute at least 25% of the grant amount, the Governor said.

Kristi Asendorf of Child Care Resource and Referral says the money would certainly be welcome, but she says the greatest ceoncern is not centered around facilities as much as around salaries.

(Kristi Asendorf/ Child Care Resource and Referral) " I really think it'd be great if there was a state taskforce to look at the whole issue. Because I am concerned about what the proposal contains. It might be kind of a bandage that's going to help with some of the problem, but not really get at the root of the problem. Salaries are really a big part of budget for child care, but the salaries aren't very good either. So, like I said, I'm glad that he does think it's an issue."
