Quite often we in the media report that Mississippi is at the bottom of some survey or poll. Today we want to share some good news. Mississippi is one of the best states in the nation when it comes to being prepared to protect our children during disasters.
Save the Children, in its most recent assessment, found Mississippi meets four critical criteria. They include plans for evacuation, reunification with families and evacuation for special need kids at child care facilities, as well as evacuation plans for schools.
The study revealed that the private and public sectors in Mississippi have worked together to make sure our children are as safe as possible during a major disaster. One local company that has been at the forefront of issues facing our children is Chevron in Pascagoula.
Following Hurricane Katrina Chevron restored 40 childcare centers in Jackson County. In addition, Chevron along with Save the Children and other organizations restored 37 other centers along the coast. Chevron also contributed two million dollars to Save the Children to build two state of the art childcare centers in Pass Christian and Hancock County.
