A day-care provider faces a felony battery charge in the death of a 6-month-old Chesterton infant who was in her care in September.

Deborah Parlock, 53, is charged with battery resulting in the death of a person less than 14 years of age, which is a Class A felony. Parlock was taken to the Porter County Jail on Wednesday.

Nicholas Munden was found unresponsive on Sept. 19 at Parlock's day care that she operated in her home in Liberty Township.

He was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital and doctors took him off of life support on Sept. 29. The Cook County, Ill., medical examiner's office ruled that Munden's death was a homicide by blunt force trauma to the head.

The medical examiner said blunt force trauma can be the result of someone shaking a baby, but it can be caused by other means.

The medical examiner who performed the autopsy said she found signs of possible previous brain injuries on Munden.

Parlock's day-care center was operating without a license, which is legal if they care for five or fewer children. Shortly after Munden's death, the day-care center was warned about caring for eight children.
