VALPARAISO -- The Liberty Township day-care provider charged with felony battery in the death of a 6-month-old is scheduled for trial Nov. 2.
Deborah Parlock, 53, received her court dates and had her bail set at $50,000 at her initial hearing Thursday morning.
She had not bailed out as of Thursday evening, Porter County Jail officials said.
As a condition of her bail, she cannot engage in child care for profit nor be alone with any child under age 5.
Parlock has been charged with a Class A felony, the highest level besides murder, and faces up to 50 years in prison if convicted of battery resulting in the death of a person less than 14 years old.
Her attorney, John Vouga, was out of town and couldn't be reached for comment. Parlock's initial hearing was done via video conference.
The alleged incident happened Sept. 19, when Parlock called 911 and said that Nicholas Munden was having trouble breathing and that she initiated CPR.
Munden, of Chesterton, was taken to Porter hospital, then transported to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital.
Doctors there took him off life support Sept. 29, and the Cook County, Ill., medical examiner's office ruled the child's death a homicide by blunt force trauma to the head.
Dr. Kelley Staley, the associate medical director of Child Protective Services at the University of Chicago Hospital, "characterized Nicholas' brain injury as devastating," court records state.
Staley also said the injuries happened after the parents dropped the child off at day care.
Parlock has operated her day-care center without a license, which the state of Indiana only allows if five or fewer children are in care.
The day care received a warning shortly after Munden's death about having eight children in its care.
