Superintendent
of public instruction Tom Luna says an early childhood education
program that Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter wants eliminated should be saved.
Luna says the Parents as Teachers program does an excellent
job and that children who participate in it enter first grade with
higher test scores.
The Parents as Teachers program teaches parents how to keep young children healthy and prepare them for school.
The program is scheduled to end in two weeks.
Luna says he has been meeting with Otter and the Department of Health and Welfare to find money to keep the program going.
