The owner of a Macon day care who has been in business more than 30 years said a lot of neighbors and friends support her effort to be open 24 hours.
On Monday, the Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission unanimously approved ,Ira Mae Jackson’s conditional-use application to extend the hours of the Jackson Day Care Center at 3764 Log Cabin Drive to offer 24-hour service.
“There are people who have nowhere to leave their kids when they go to work at night, and that’s why I’m here,” Jackson said during the meeting. “I have a petition signed by people saying ‘we really need this.’ ... If I can do something to help a child I’ll do it.”
The day care center, which has been in operation since 1978, is licensed for 50 children from 6:45 a.m.-5:45 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, according to the commission’s staff report.
The overnight care would be provided at the center for 15 children, ages 1 to 12 years old, the report states.
The day care intends to provide a “24-hour extended full 7-day child care facility,” according to the applicant’s statement.
The day care is in a residential district and is surrounded by homes, but Jackson said the neighbors didn’t mind the lighting at the facility.
