Officials from TEAM Inc. have unveiled a proposal to house a combination day-care center and school readiness program for local children at the Trinity Lutheran Church on Howe Avenue.

TEAM Executive Director Richard Knoll presented the plan during a recent public hearing of the Planning and Zoning Commission.

The commission closed the hearing, and is expected to vote on the proposal at its next meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.

According to Knoll, the center, which would be housed within the church at 183 Howe Ave., would accommodate 18-20 preschool children.

Knoll said that TEAM has been looking for a location in Shelton to house the program, especially after having run a successful Head Start program in the city about 15 years ago in the former Ripton School.

Knoll said Shelton preschoolers who qualify for the school readiness program now attend TEAM's Ansonia center on Howard Avenue.

He said he's thrilled with the prospect of being able to offer a preschool program in Shelton once again.

"There hasn't been adequate public space available, until the Trinity Lutheran offer," Knoll said.

Knoll said he, along with the Board of Education and the Shelton School Readiness Council, recently applied for grant money through the state Department of Education, in an effort to subsidize the operation of the new center.

He said if the funding is approved, the program will be "affordable to all city residents;" children ages 3-5 are eligible to enroll.
